UK Kennel Club Registrations 2007 - the $64,000 question PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 04 May 2007

Will Dandie Dinmont Terriers survive as a Breed?

64,470 pedigree dogs were registered with the UK Kennel Club in the 1st Quarter of 2007 and around half of these were Terriers. Dandie Dinmonts managed just 28 - four more than in the same Quarter in 2006.

West Highland Whites  2,121; Border Terriers 2,057; Staffordshire Bull Terriers 3,047 - and Dandies 28. That is perspective.

Apart from wondering where on earth all these 64,470 dogs registered in the first three months of 2007 actually are, the $64,000 question that still has to be answered is "Have we, in the beginning of the 21st Century, ensured that Dandie Dinmont Terriers do not face imminent extinction?".

Quote from A Member of the UK Kennel Club Vulnerable Native Breeds Committee:

"Whilst there are a significant number of Native Breeds that are causing the Committee concern, for example last year 15 Native Breeds registered less than 150 puppies, the position does appear to be stabilizing. Whilst many of the breeds' registrations could not decline further, this is one glimmer of hope for the future. It is hoped that, after a period of consolidation, these historic British Breeds can begin to move forward to a sustainable future."
